Alexander Wang "Could Have Slept" in the Balenciaga Archives.

Alexander Wang hasn't said much about his new job at Balenciaga, but he's already logging hours studying the house's design history.

"Immediately,' he said, 'I want to see the archives. I want to understand the culture behind the brand,'" said the brand's CEO Isabelle Guichot in an interview with WWD. "He could have slept there almost."

Pulling all-nighters might be necessary for Wang, who's due to present his first collection — a Fall 2013 women's line — in February. Guichot says she and Wang haven't decided how they're going to present the line and that she doesn't want to create any "unnecessary pressure" for her new designer.

Other than saying he felt "deeply honored" by his appointment, Wang hasn't commented on the new position other than to say, "We're still figuring things out."
Guichot has been a little more talkative and said she chose Wang because his understanding of the world — to say nothing of his fluent Mandarin and other ties to China, where the brand has 10 stores — will help bring Balenciaga forward.

"We wanted someone with global thinking, a citizen of the world, and someone who could understand the digital world and the direction of fashion and retail tomorrow," she said. "It will be a new vision; a new understanding of the brand. The heritage of Balenciaga is so big. Just a part of it has been exploited, but obviously not all of it."

Stamp of Approval: Lagerfeld Calls Alexander Wang "the Best Man For the Job"

If you'd been waiting with bated breath to hear what Karl Lagerfeld thinks about Alexander Wang taking over Balenciaga, you may now exhale.

"Considering how hard it is to replace a man such as Nicolas Ghesquière, the best solution is to choose someone completely different," the Chanel designer wrote in an email to Modmods, the fashion arm of the global daily newspaper Metro

"As the impression we have had so far is that Mr. Pinault very much wants to 'expand' this area of the business, I believe that Alexander Wang is the best man for the job. His fashion is easier, his personality is more open to the world and he has very good contacts. People 'adore' Alexander, I too like him very much and I think he is a good choice in light of the fashion house's future projects.

Furthermore, his origins will prove to be very helpful in parts of the world where fashion is most important as well as the luxury industry."

As Fashionista noted in its post about the subject, Lagerfeld guest edited Metro earlier this year. His voice joins a chorus of congratulations for Wang that came from all corners of the fashion industry. Wang himself hasn't said much about his new job but is already hard at work on his debut women's Fall 2013 collection.

Update: "Ambassador Wintour" Rumor Makes It Back to the White House.

Rumors about Anna Wintour being in the running for an ambassadorship are so strong that they've made it all the way back to Washington.

ABC reporter Jake Tapper brought up the rumor — although indirectly — at yesterday's White House press briefing, asking press secretary Jay Carney what the president looks for in an ambassador.

Carney said he was "not going to engage in speculation about possible personnel announcements," adding that the president "looks for talent, wisdom, and character in all of his appointees, and he would do that regardless of the position."

After a few follow-up questions, Tapper jokingly asked whether the president had ever seen The Devil Wears Prada.

Serious speculation that Wintour might be appointed ambassador to the UK or France arose last week when Bloomberg reported Wintour's campaign fundraising efforts for President Obama made her a top contender for the positions.

While rumors have circulated for years that Wintour would leave Vogue for a post in the diplomatic corps, "two people familiar with the matter" said Obama has considered nominating Wintour for one of the two positions. Wintour was one of Obama's top campaign bundlers in 2012, raising over $500,000 for his reelection effort through dinners and other events. The Runway to Win line of campaign merchandise — which Wintour spearheaded — raised another $40 million.

Wintour is said to be in competition with two other top bundlers, businessmen Matthew Barzun and Marc Lasry. If Obama does nominate Wintour and she makes it through Senate confirmation for either position, she'd replace Ambassador Louis Susman in London or Ambassador Charles Rivkin in Paris. Obama nominated both men for their positions after he was elected president in 2008, and neither is expected to take on a second term.

But would Wintour really leave fashion for politics? A Vogue spokeswoman told Bloomberg that Wintour is "happy with her current job," and friends of Wintour's have said in the past that she "has absolutely no interest in an ambassadorship."

It's a Girl: Gisele Welcomes Baby Daughter Vivian Lake.

Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady are the new parents of a baby girl. The supermodel announced Friday morning that she gave birth to a daughter, named Vivian Lake, earlier this week.

"We feel so lucky to have been able to experience the miracle of birth once again and are forever grateful for the opportunity to be the parents of another little angel," Bündchen wrote in a Facebook post, including a picture of her holding Vivian's hand. "Vivian Lake was born at home on December 5. She is healthy and full of life. Thank you all for your support and well wishes. We wish you and your families many blessings."

Bündchen confirmed that she was having another child in August, but rumors that she was pregnant for a second time circulated shortly after the Met Gala in May. The model was said to have asked Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci to make her dress for the gala with room enough for two.

Vivian Lake is Bündchen's second child with Brady; their son, Benjamin, was born in December 2009. Brady had another son, John, with actress Bridget Moynahan in August 2007.

Raf Simons Working Fast to Make Dior More Like Chanel.

Raf Simons says he's working on turning Dior into a brand that everyone in the world will recognize as soon as they see it — sort of like Chanel.

"The Chanel woman? I don't even need to see, I smell her from round the corner, but I don't recognize the Dior woman," Simons said in an interview for the January issue of Vogue UK. "I want to work on that fast. Chanel has the deux-pièces with the pockets, or the bouclé, but what is it for Dior nowadays? I can't say."

Eventually, Simons wants Dior to be something that appeals to a wide variety of people.
"Dior's ultimate obsession is that he wanted [the public] to wear it. I want them to wear it on the street," he said. "If it doesn't relate to the outside, then it would be very theatrical for me."
That mission — to make serious and wearable clothing for Dior — has guided Simons's short tenure at the French fashion house, and even extends to his couture collections.

"I want to get away from couture just being done for a picture, or for a single moment on the red carpet," he said in an interview with Vogue Australia last month. "I want to try and convince women that couture can be worn in the day and that there's a reality and a relevance there, because that's what Mr. Christian Dior wanted. In my opinion, Christian Dior was never, ever theater."

Downton Abbey dine with Ralph Lauren.

Ralph Lauren has based his global empire on his passion for period aristocratic style, so it should come as no surprise that he is a big fan of 20s Brit drama Downton Abbey.
One look at his tweed-littered hunting and shooting-inspired autumn winter 2012 collection would be enough to suggest the designer was an avid follower of the UK series, though it wasn’t directly cited as an inspiration.

Last night the designer and the editor of Vanity Fair Graydon Carter, hosted an evening in New York with members of the cast, who have become famous in America after the show’s trans-Atlantic success, offering cocktails and a special screening of the most recent series, followed by a Q&A.

Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggat, Elizabeth McGovern (a.k.a. Lady Mary, Anna and Lady Downton) et al. gathered at the Museum of Modern Art, wearing head-to-toe Ralph Lauren Collection (from both the spring summer 2013 and autumn winter 2012 collections) and Ralph Lauren vintage jewellery for the evening, which was attended by members of the New York press.
Our minds are running riot at the potential conversations that were had at the dinner. Could series four of our favourite Sunday drama be costumed by Ralph Lauren? We’ve got our fingers tightly crossed.
Stella McCartney Most Popular Online.

STELLA MCCARTNEY has been named the most-searched-for fashion brand on the internet. The designer, who created the Olympic Team GB kit and was named British Fashion Awards' Designer of the Year, was ranked the highest fashion-related search term in the 2012 Google Zeitgeist list.
In second place was Karl Lagerfeld, closely followed by lingerie label Victoria's Secret in third, Alice Temperley in fourth and Versace in fifth place. The annual round-up conducted by Google measures the fastest-growing searches conducted by UK consumers over the last 12 months.
The Duchess of Cambridge was crowned one of the most-searched-for people of 2012 - specifically, her pre-married name, Kate Middleton - second only to Whitney Houston, who died back in February. Third most-Googled star of 2012 was Gary Barlow, followed by fellow X Factor judge Tulisa in fourth place and Olympian Jessica Ennis in fifth.
The most-searched term overall was Euro 2012, proving that the football tournament attracted more online interest than the London 2012 Games. Olympics Tickets was the second most-popular search term of 2012.
The most popular film was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Skyfall - followed by sci-fi thriller Prometheus in second, and The Hunger Games in third. The top trending music artists were named as former X factor contestant Lucy Spraggan, the Military Wives choir and The Voice judge, Will.I.Am.
